How to create PDF's
If you do not have a PDF writer on your machine, MAC users can simply make a PDF by selecting "print" and clicking the "PDF" option. PC users can convert documents into a PDF using one of a number of free tools - available online or to download. YUDU recommend using www.freepdfconvert.com
Recommended PDF specifications
Most PDF's should be fine, but as a guide, the following specifications will create the best quality digital publications:
All pages should be in a single PDF file, with the pages in the correct order.
Single pages (not double page spreads).
200 DPI (or greater). YUDU can handle pages of even the highest resolution.
Cropped to exact size (no need for cropmarks/bleed etc. which are often required for printing and so you will probably only need to consider this point if your document was originally created for print).
Embedded fonts - (you can simply enable this feature when you save your PDF, so that the YUDU system picks up all web and email links, making them live).
Make sure your PDF pages are all the same size - or it'll show up in your digital publication.
Flatten all transparencies so they appear correctly in your YUDU publication (this is an advanced design application technique that most people wont need to worry about).
Viewing a PDF
To read / view PDF files, you will need PDF reading software on your machine.
Download Adobe Reader - it's FREE!
Links / other free applications that may come in
handy when creating your documents
MAC USERS - Use i-life, i-Photo (installed on all MACS) and i-work - these allow you to create albums, brochures, newsletters etc and convert them into a PDF that can be uploaded to YUDU.
PC USERS - www.openoffice.org - is a free service that allows you to create lots of different publication layouts, including images.
Can I use Word docs or other file formats?
Yes but when you have finished creating your document, you will need to save it as a PDF file before uploading to YUDU, as currently, YUDU only supports PDF files. Mac users have this facility built in. PC users can easily convert most file formats to PDF for free using www.freepdfconvert.com
Can I add links to my digital publication?
The YUDU system will automatically make all web and email links live so your readers can click through and interact with your publication. However, you must embed the fonts in your PDF for this to work, which is a feature you simply enable when you save your PDF.
Can I add video or flash to my publication?
This facility is only available with our Pro product which allows you to easily add video and flash and has all sorts of other advanced features. YUDU Publishing Pro is ideal for the advanced amateur or professional and corporate publications.
Can I edit my digital publication?
The Freedom service has preset features such as automatic linking but in order to make it as quick and simple as possible to publish, you can't alter the digital publication after you have uploaded your PDF. There is nothing to stop you from amending the original PDF file and uploading a new, updated document! If you want to have a full editing facility you need to use our Pro product.
How do I put my publication on my website / blog?
After uploading your file, you will be sent an email with the link to your publication, along with a jpeg of the front cover and HTML code which will allow you to easily embed the publication on your Blog/website. You can simply add the image and link to your site (as you would any other link) or add the HTML code.
Can I send it out on email?
Yes, simply add the link to the main body of the email. It will not be an attachment - so YUDU is ideal for converting large files and emailing them out for others to view. Large files such as PowerPoint docs can be converted easily, meaning no more large file attachments on email.
How do I post my publication to social bookmarking and social networking sites?
Simply cut and paste the URL link and post it to your favourite sites, as you would any other URL link.
You can also post your publication direct from the reader toolbar within the edition. Click the '@' icon on the toolbar. Here you can send to a friend (simply add an email address), and submit to DIGG, Delicious and Newsvine. We will continue to update this - currently we're working on instant submission to Facebook. Please feel free to suggest your favourite bookmarking or networking sites that you would like us to include. Feedback here.
I don't want to share! How do I protect my publication so that it is private?
You decide where you post your digital publication URL. Place it on a secure area of your website or just email it to your selected group. In other words, keep the link to yourself and no one will see it!
You don't HAVE to share them - we just make it easy for those who want to share them.
We offer full password protection on our Pro product if you require higher security and wish to restrict access.
